Do It Yourself Snowboard Audio Helmet

Make Your Own Snowboard Helmet

So after purchasing a Red Audio Drop In kit, I was really disappointed in the sound quality.  That's when I decided to make my own with a decent pair of spare Sony MDR-XD100's.

The Giro Encore II helmet.

The original helmet's earpads with Red Audio Drop Ins.  Note the black tabs that are used to wedge the pieces into the helmet.

Here is a close up of the headphone earcup assembly.  The basic idea was to form a tab similar to what the helmet earpieces had to insert into the helmet.

Here is a comparison of one of the arms shaved down to a similar width and shape of the helmet ear tab.
Another close up comparing the modified headphone piece and the ear piece.
I had to shorten the 6ft cable to about 2.5ft.  I cut the excess off and reconnected the tip then taped it back up neatly with electric tape.
Now that the cable was the right length, I fit each piece to where the ear tabs used to be.
To my pleasant surprise the headphone piece fit perfectly!
Both of the headphones resting nicely in the helmet.
I then fit the chin straps over the headphone pieces.  These too fit nice and snug.
